Tempered Glass vs. Laminated Glass
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass, sometimes called toughened glass, gains its increased tensile strength through a rapid cooling process. This method creates glass that is significantly more resistant to impacts and intense heat. Notably, when tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small, cube-like pieces instead of sharp shards, minimizing the risk of injury. However, while tempered glass is durable, it cannot be repaired—attempting to cut or drill into it will cause it to shatter.
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass, on the other hand, is made using a different process. It consists of multiple layers of glass bonded together with layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) through intense heat and pressure. This structure prevents the glass from shattering upon impact, as the PVB layers hold the broken pieces in place. Laminated glass offers additional advantages, including UV radiation reduction and glare control, thanks to the varying thicknesses of the glass and PVB layers.

Common Applications for Laminated Glass
Storefronts and Commercial Buildings
Business owners use laminated glass for storefronts and entryways to enhance security. Its robust construction makes it difficult for intruders to break through, serving as both a physical and psychological deterrent to theft or vandalism.
Skylights and Roof Glazing
Skylights often feature laminated glass due to its resilience against harsh weather conditions like hail, snow, and ice. It also offers UV protection, reducing fading of interior furnishings caused by sunlight.
Residential Windows and Doors
Homeowners increasingly choose laminated glass for windows, patio doors, and balcony barriers. It improves home security, reduces noise pollution, and enhances energy efficiency through its insulation properties.
