Safety Glass – Laminated Tempered Glass Panels
Years ago, safety glass was created to be stronger and less likely to hurt people in the event of breakage, like the glass used for car windshields. Today, we have two different types of safety glass, which are tempered or toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass. While both types of glass produce great results, each one is more effective for different projects. Trust the experts at Orian Windows & Doors to choose the right glass for you.

Differences Between Laminated and Tempered Glass
Tempered glass, sometimes called toughened glass, has an increased tensile strength thanks to a sped-up cooling process. This entire method creates glass that is much harder to break with impacts and intense heat. Moreover, when broken tempered glass shatters into many tiny cubes instead of shards, which again, minimizes injury in the event of an impact. Although durable, tempered glass can still shatter if you try to cut or drill a hole into it for repair purposes.
Laminated glass is made much differently. Between multiple layers of glass are multiple layers of polyvinyl betrayal otherwise known as PVB. All of the layers are fused with intense pressure and heat — this stops the glass from shattering when impacted. Laminated safety glass also has the advantage of being able to reduce UV radiation and control glare because the various layers of PVB and glass are varying in thickness.
Emergency Glass Repair & Replacement
Common Applications for Laminated Glass
With laminated safety glass’s ability to prevent shattering, it is the perfect candidate for vehicle windshields. It makes the road easier to see for the driver on a sunny day and it will not shatter in the event of a car crash.
Business owners also like to use laminated safety glasses for their storefronts because they will deter criminals from trying to break in. And does your home have a skylight? It’s likely laminated glass which is engineered to stand up to persistent sunshine or snow and ice.
Common Applications for Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is very lightweight and still manages to be very resistant to high levels of force. That’s why tempered glass is usually the preferred choice for crockery and cookware, glass tables and doors, shower screens and even diving masks for fans of scuba.
You’ll also find tempered glass windows on passengers’ doors of vehicles. From office desks to the shelves in your refrigerator, tempered glass has many, many uses.
